Welcome! The
DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, DC, is a volunteer
women's service organization dedicated to promoting and preserving
American history, and securing America's future through the education of
children. Any woman is eligible for membership who is not less than
eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, bloodline descent of an
ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. The Rebecca Pickens Chapter was organized in 1916. We are located in Dillon, South Carolina, and we would love to talk with you about becoming a member of the Society. If you would like more information about the DAR, including membership requirements, please email our chapter contact person! Who was Rebecca Pickens?
Rebecca Pickens was the wife of General Andrew Pickens, and is depicted as one of the most heroic women in the American Revolutionary War. She was born on November 18, 1745, in the Abbeville District of South Carolina. She and General Pickens had three sons and six daughters. One of her sons became Governor of South Carolina in 1816. She was the cousin of the Honorable John C. Calhoun. She and her husband are buried in the Old Stone Church Cemetery.
